Prora in progress

For Stern magazine

Prora undergoes significant change, as high-end holiday apartments are built in the Nazi - era construction site, displacing citizen-funded projects such as a museum and a night club that have sprung up over the years while the complex has stood mostly vacant since Nazi-times.

Background: Prora is a colossal building complex located on the island of Rügen, Germany, originally constructed by Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1939 as part of the Strength Through Joy (Kraft durch Freude or KdF) project. It was intended to serve as a massive holiday resort for German workers, showcasing the regime's propaganda of providing affordable leisure. The complex, which remains unfinished due to the onset of World War II, stretches over 4.5 kilometers along the beach. In recent years, Prora has undergone significant transformation, with parts of the structure being renovated into holiday apartments, a hotel & spa & shops.
